Great Ending to a Rainy Day.

So it rained all night and practically all day, making me not want to go out in it even though I would love to see the city more before classes begin tomorrow. The end of the day proved to be successful as the clouds lifted and allowed me to catch the last glimpse of sunlight on the buildings in Florence. (These were all taken in still mode on the Bloggie!)

The Duomo (St Marie de' Fiore)

The Arno River City Side

St. Croce

No matter what corner you turn in this city, there is always something amazing to find, historic or otherwise. I have had the best time just turning the wrong way down the street and walking through a sleepy residential area.

Scrambled Sunday

Well at least I know I won't starve now! First meal made in my apartment's small kitchen, scrambled eggs with milano salami bought at the supermarket down the street. It was difficult to shop there since everything is in italian and the brands are all italian brands but at least I could recognize some foods! Now if only I could find the salt...

Steady Saturday

Not too bad, I really needed to chill out alittle and find the calm since I've been on edge with excitement since I got here Wednesday. Christina and Rachael are on an excursion to Rome with LdM so that just left Emma and I with the apartment to ourselves. First thing we did once we finally got up? Call the landlord because our roommates had dead bolted us in the apartment from the outside.

Doesn't sound like a problem right? Well it was, Emma had previously been dead bolted in the apartment and could not get out until she called the landlord, so in short we called her (lucky for us she was home, which she usually isn't on weekends) and she came over and unlocked the door. Then the three of us and her boyfriend tackled the problem because there should be no reason we can't get out of the apartment. Apparently we were all doing it wrong because he go the door to open every time he tried. Odd? Yes. We just won't be clicking the dead bolt when we know someone is home until we figure out how to unlock it properly. The door already locks well enough on its own when we close it and leave the apartment and the outer door to the building locks too so our landlady said not to worry about it.

By the way for those of you who missed the last post, my key is featured here.

So after all that we were ready for lunch, Emma showed me a great little "take and go" place that sells Mesopotamian kebabs for really cheap. While I had not had much pasta but had alot of sandwiches and pizza, this place was a nice change of pace that I will indeed go back to if I need a reprieve. It is close to the apartment and sooooo delicious!

Once lunch had finished we decided then that we were going to try the public laundry place down the street from the apartment. Last night one of our roommates tried to use the washer in the kitchen and despite following all directions from the landlord the washer did not spin the clothes nor did it drain the water in the cavity. So her clothes were sopping wet, water was all over the floor, and it will take ages to try them. Emma and I were not about to have that.

The laundry station was actually quite convenient, a couple euros to wash and even dry all done in an hour. Definitly will be hitting up there again.

The rest of the day was uninteresting really, I went to the Billa supermarket again and bought eggs, tomatoes, olive oil, and orange/carrot/lemon juice. So far I have all the makings for Omelets with the salami and cheese I bought two days ago as well as makings for sandwiches. So far so good, though I have yet to buy salt because for the life of me I don't know what it is in Italian and being at the market trying to buy salt is nerve-racking.

So now I bid you good evening and go back to drinking my peach tea (I bought that too!) and sorting papers and due dates to get ready for classes next week.

Ciao!

Duomo Exploration

As seen on Facebook but here is a few pictures of my trip up to the top of the Duomo with my two apartment-mates Christina and Rachael:

Ciao!

Let us recap...

Saluti da Firenze !

Sorry everyone for not posting anything since I got to Florence, I was just so immersed in the culture and in awe of the city that I lost track of time! Florence, let me just say wow.

Flight from Charlotte to Munich was not all bad, didn't sleep too well but not bad, but the flight from Munich to Florence was just plain hectic. So I got the airport on time, stunned as all get out having never flown on my own before, got through customs and security and all that jazz so the early morning was going well. Until I saw the flight before me leaving for Florence was delayed. This in turn made my flight delayed and I spent a couple hours trying to figure out how to call LdM to let them know I was delayed. (Dumb dumb here packed everything except the access code to the cell-phone)But I did eventually succeed and call from a T-Mobile payphone using coin euros and my plane did eventually get into Florence. Apparently there was heavy fog in the area making it dangerous to land a plane in and if it had not cleared enough for use to land we would have had to got to Bologna and take an hour bus ride to Florence.

I took a taxi from the airport, my bag got there safely, and got all my housing and residence info as well as the keys to my apartment. After that I took another taxi to the apartment clear across city and lugged my suitcase up a bunch of stairs to my apartment.

That was how I met my first apartment-mate, Rachael, trying but failing miserable to unlock the door with the large old key I was given. No I'm not kidding this thing is so large it won't fit in my pocket!

Fortunately she eventually got it open but it did take the two of us on opposite sides of the door some time to get it open again.

Once our other roommate came back we went out on in the city center and proceeded to get ourselves lost on purpose. You find the most excellent restaurants when you are lost, we found this awesome little pizza shop where you bought sections by the pound. It was awesome!

More to come as well as more pictures, I will be roaming around Florence tomorrow after I go grocery shopping. I also need to get some gelato, I have yet to have any...

Ciao!

Housing!!!

Finally, I was beginning to worry about whether I was going to have to live in a cardboard box while I am abroad!

Excitement! I live about a mile from the buildings where my classes are on Via Faenza & near the San Lorenzo Church but I really could care less because I plan to do alot of walking and exploring! And I looked it up with street view in Google maps and the building looks like it has some age to it, which is just fine with me!

I also finally know the names of the other girls I will be living with in the appartamento, it is set up so that there are two double rooms together that are attached to a living area and kitchen:

Emma Owen (My roomate)
Christina Indorato
Rachael Reagan

International Cellphone!

So it finally came in and it is so small!!!

My new Samsung Galaxy is not international compatible and while I am abroad my university requires I have a cell phone so they might get in touch with me in an emergency since there is no landlines for my apartment. (which I don't have an address for yet!) So here is my phone that I will take calls on while I am in Europe from people in Europe I meet. As for communication to my U.S. friends and family email and Skype will be my primary forms of communication.

Also I got my ISIC card in the mail earlier last week!
Still needs a picture on it but with all the weather we've been having east coast wise I have not been to a CVS to get a picture done for the photo ID part. Just another thing on the list.

Two weeks till departure!

Acceptance & Schedule

Official acceptance and schedule for my semester abroad!

Pictures from Summer 2010

Reminiscent photography of my previous trip to Italy in Summer 2010, I really don't have alot of Florence due to the fact I was touring Lorenzo de' Medici instead of sight seeing so I hope to expand that album while I'm over there!

Definitely getting excited!!!
